Music by Dmitri Shostakovich opens and closes this concert by the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. The composer’s Fifth Symphony is the featured work. It is not only the most popular of Shostakovich’s fifteen symphonies but one of the most popular symphonies of the entire twentieth century. The same composer’s impressive Festive Overture opens the concert, followed by a lovely musical landscape of the Bohemian countryside, Smetana’s Moldau.
The final Brandenburg Concerto programme is in the hands of Swiss conductor Maurice Steger, a dynamic musician whose talents are regularly in demand on four continents. Steger is also a virtuoso recorder player, in which capacity he stars in two of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos (Nos. 2 and 4). Steger fills out his programme with a suite from a Handel opera (Almira, “music overflowing with genius and invention,” as one critic noted) and other intriguing works.

The MPYO presents two of the world’s most beloved serenades; one for winds and one for strings. Dvořák’s Serenade is one of his sunniest, most enjoyable compositions. Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings is his tribute to Mozart, a thoroughly delightful work in which Tchaikovsky at times imitates the style of his favourite composer. A bold and brassy fanfare by Dukas opens the programme.
Roberto Abbado’s programme opens with Berlioz’s dazzling portrayal of Roman festivities and closes with Mendelssohn’s beloved Italian Symphony. In between, we hear a violin concerto by one of Italy’s best known composers, Nicolò Paganini, whose music for violin is known for its technical wizardry and virtuosic flair. Luigi Boccherini too was Italian but spent much of his career in Spain, where he received inspiration for his Night Music of the Streets of Madrid.
